2020 is right around the corner and Common Cents Energy Recovery want you to have your most energy saving year yet! We have put together the top things to consider to keep your building’s HVAC system running in top condition.
The Top Maintenance Things to Consider for your HVAC System
The Age of the Equipment
The older your HVAC equipment the more likely it is to not let you know when it's having an issue, which can lead to more maintenance and service calls if the issues go unchecked for too long. Newer systems feature a lot of smart technology to prevent this from happening but purchasing a whole new system isn’t always feasible. That’s why we recommend an annual assessment (or bi-annual assessment in some trouble cases) and removal of build-up on older systems to keep them running like new, keeping your service calls to a minimum.
Changing the Air Filters
This is an easy one but can somehow get overlooked until there is a problem. Changing your filters often is a simple way to prevent unnecessary wear on your blower motors and blocked airflow which makes the whole system work harder. Often times these be changed by someone on your staff which will save money by not having a tech come out to do it.
Thermostat Check-up
The thermostat is the “brains” of your HVAC operation and if it’s not functioning correctly your whole system could be in trouble! If your system has an older, non-programmable thermostat we highly recommend getting one that is programmable. By setting the proper program for your building your are able to save energy by setting lower temperatures when you know there will be no one there over long weekends in the wintertime or adjusting your AC capacity at peak hours in the summer. There’s a lot you can do to prevent energy waste starting at the thermostat.
Check Your Refrigerant Levels
If your HVAC system is running low on refrigerant it will have to work even harder to cool your building causing unnecessary wear and tear on the system but also an increase in energy consumption on your bill that really adds up over a hot summer like 2019!
When Were Your HVAC Coils Cleaned Last?
If the answer is never, we can pretty much guarantee that your HVAC system is not running at full capacity and could be potentially wasting $1,000’s per year in energy that you are already paying for! Dirt, debris, and smoke build-up naturally on these coils as air passes through from outside of your building - it’s unavoidable! But what is avoidable is continuing to force your system to run under these conditions. That’s why Common Cents Energy Recovery is offering free assessments
to buildings with large HVAC systems.
