Beginning in 2017, Denver commercial and multi-family buildings 25,000 square feet and more are required to track and report their Energy Star score. Building owners will have to determine the efficiency of their buildings with the EPA’s Energy Star portfolio manager, which the city will then put into a searchable database and map.
Energy use from heating and cooling in buildings is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Denver, making up approximately 57 percent of Denver’s carbon emissions. The bench-marking is estimated to lead to annual energy savings between two and three percent.
In addition to bench-marking their current energy use, property owners must improve energy efficiency every 5 years. What better way to do that by having your HVAC coils cleaned with guaranteed energy saving results?
“By passing this ordinance, we’re aiming to make Denver a sustainable city for generations to come,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. “Local actions can have global impacts, and Denver will join with cities across the world who are taking positive steps to make their cities more resilient to our changing climate.”
